Apartment Therapy

So, apparently, my creativity has decided to channel itself into working on my apartment. Yesterday I tackled my office, and today, I started cleaning, and then started organizing my kitchen (after getting all the boxes ready to go to the recycling centre). The issue with my kitchen has always been where to put things – I don’t have much space, so whatever doesn’t fit in the cabinets or on the counter usually ends up on our Wobbly Table. Which means, that we pretty much *never* actually eat at the table. Which is sad, because I *like* to eat at the table. Sometime while I was cleaning I had the brilliant idea of moving all the boxes that were on the table, and the blender onto the picture window behind it with the cookbooks. The toaster has a *ridiculously* short cord, so that and my little Coke pan is staying on the table with the tea set. Still, there’s much more room than there was before, so win.

And, to top that off, I’m completely rid of cardboard in one room. I’m hoping to grab the cardboard box we’ve been using to hold things with cords in the living room out tomorrow too. Then, it’ll just be the bedroom and the box of magazines.

Food

I set out the hamburger, so I think I’ll semi-surprise Alex with dinner around 6 something. Work has been long this week, so I think he’ll like that. And then, I think we’re going to see the Green Lantern, and hope it’s better than the Green Hornet.

In the meantime, I think I’m going to go paint a musing (or take a nap….).

I think I used too much glitter…

I finished my second fairy house today. Added all the decorations, admittedly, mostly glitter. I also found a few other odds and ends to put inside – my compact mirror and some tiny animals from boxes of Red Rose tea (or whatever it’s called). I used my bottle cap to top the thread-spool-crochet-topped mushroom table and added a magical button swing/elevator on the second level. I also used pink thread to add a bit of flowyness to the outside, and a button hangs down above the entrance. I think I finally made something that my husband *liked* the glitter on…although now it’s all over me and I can’t seem to get it off. :)

In other news, I went outside today when we had a bit of sun and that felt really good and I stopped coughing for a bit. I’m coughing again now, but I think I’m getting better. :)

Playing with Cardboard Again

Today, I’m doing a little better. Still averse to coughing and sneezing all over my paints – not to mention making my neck-ache worse (hate colds or whatever this is). So I think, I’m going to build another fairy house with one of the tiny cardboard boxes we recently got instead. This may or may not become an obsession, but it’s really fun, and a good way to be creative without spewing all over my paintings. I’ll probably be planning out what to do with my next three canvases too, and deciding whether I should focus on larger or smaller paintings. I find that I enjoy small paintings more because it’s easier for me to focus on adding lots of little details without getting so bored from laying on the huge amount of background that I feel the need to hurry my way through so I can get to what I wanted to paint before I forget. I guess that’s what happens when I start painting in layers as opposed to all at once…go figure. It’s something to work on anyway, which is always good.

Maybe instead of coloring on paper, I’ll paint on card-stock and use that as the interior to the house…

back cover

This week I made an announcement about the book I’ve been illustrating (and writing), so I’ve been trying to get the final copy formatted. After uploading the initial cover I realized I need a back cover to go with the front cover. I decided it’d be better to paint it to keep the style together, but I also wanted to use an elevated surface after watching a tutorial from Empty Easel.

Since I don’t have an easel yet (hint) I taped a square piece of cardboard and a longish rectangle piece of cardboard together, folded the ends for stability, covered the painting part with wax paper (for easy paper removal) and taped it to my desk.

It’s amazing how much easier it is to paint (with watercolors at least) that way.

It didn’t take long for me to come up with a lovely cover for the back of the book. One step closer now. :)

Distraction

Tuesday was the last Oil Painting class (that I missed, stupid soup) so yesterday, I decided to move my materials out of the bag they were in and into my office. Somewhere between transport I actually looked at my office, and the closet doors ajar from cardboard boxes, the cluttered floor, and stuff everywhere, and I started to actually clean everything. I didn’t have the forethought to take a before picture, because I was too busy trying to make it manageable, but in the end, it turned out beautifully with a few more additions of cardboard furniture.

I had a bunch of random workbooks and papers on the floor, so I pulled out two boxes and put them on top of each-other by my desk, to create a shelf-like thing for the books, my toys, and the routers. Which, surprisingly, looks way better than it did before.

Then I took my desk, and redesigned it, and moved it into the office from the living room, and it now serves as a supply holder/place to put drying paintings.

That project did end up taking all afternoon, but it was so worth it, and it feels nice to go in there now. I also did manage to get some illustrating done, and my husband’s birthday presents wrapped, so I feel incredibly accomplished!
